I know that in my Lawnmower post, I said that I wasn’t going to make a Rum and Zinc because I didn’t want to buy an entire bottle of zinc pills for a single recipe. Well, I recently became aware of all the wonderful properties that zinc possess and…
No, not that! As much as I appreciate telephones, car batteries, and handguns I am talking about how zinc supposedly helps to minimize cold symptoms. It seems that there is a lot of debate on whether or not zinc is actually helpful, but that didn’t stop me from buying some to try it out.
Also, I did not try this on myself but instead experimented on El Boyfriendo because when cold and flu season hits he will be sick for two weeks, while I usually just get the sniffles. I’m not sure how well this worked, at least as far as I can tell it didn’t make him sicker, so, success? Meh, might as well just use the leftover pills to make a cocktail.
Ingredients
- Rum
- Zinc
Directions
Add zinc tablet to rum and allow to dissolve*. Serve chilled.
The zinc tablet evaporated into the rum very quickly, about 30 seconds. However, it barely impacted the taste of the rum. I guess even the mighty powers of zinc are no match for rum based cocktails? I think the joke from the episode is that Hollywood celebrities will try to make alcoholic beverages “healthy” by including a supplement in the mix. Whether or not this can help you get better during a cold, I’d still drink a rum and zinc over a lawnmower.

Rum and Zinc Recipe From: When You Dish Upon a Star (The Simpsons Season 10 – Episode 5)
*I previously said the zinc tablet should “evaporate” which was pointed out as incorrect being of science or whatever. To that I say: Has science ever kissed a woman or won the Super Bowl or put a man on the moon?
not sure evaporate is the term you’re looking for. 🙂
NERRRRRDDDDDD! …but yeah, you are right. I guess I will change it to dissolve, will that make you happy?!
Well if you (or I guess El Boyfriendo) has had enough of these alchoholic concoctions you can always cleanse your palete with a Royal Crown Cola (as long it doesn’t get in the way of bill payments).
I’m not sure I can afford Royal Crown Cola, might need to stick to making my own Homemade Pepsi. It’s a little thick but the price is right.
