So I recently moved. And not just that, but moved out of my old home and put everything into storage. Then I kind of lived in a few different places for a month, got everything OUT of storage and finally moved into a new home. What I would have given for a magical house in the woods that fulfills my every request, including an instantaneous cucumber sandwich.
Of course, for Hilda the perfect pairing with her trademark cucumber sandwich is a peppermint tea. I briefly considered making some Woodman style “dirt tea” to go with my sandwich, but then I realized that I don’t need the smell of boiling dirt stinking up my new home. It would probably make the place smell really dirt-tea…I’ll see myself out.
Ingredients
- About 8-12 Cucumber Slices
- 2 Slices of Bread
- 2-3 Tablespoons Cream Cheese
- 1-2 Tablespoons Fresh Dill
- Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
Allow cream cheese to soften to room temperature or until it is soft enough to mix and spread. Roughly mince the dill and add to the cream cheese and mix well. I enjoy a good amount of cream cheese on my sandwiches, so if you like to eat healthy (why?) you can use less. Chop enough cucumber slices to fully cover one slice of bread. Spread the cream cheese mixture on the other bread slice. Combine bread to make your cucumber sandwich and enjoy with a hot cup of mint tea!
Now, despite how simple they seem, there are actually quite a few (potential) variations when making a cucumber sandwich. Some people like to add additional dairy including butter, mayo or sour cream with the cream cheese. I personally like to keep things simple and stick with the cream cheese and dill combination for the spread. Of course, you could also go “high tea style fancy” if that’s your mood.
Unfortunately, unlike when Hilda takes these sandwiches on her adventures, I would caution that these sandwiches don’t travel very well. The cucumbers won’t maintain much of a crunch if you let them sit for more than half an hour. Eat the sandwiches, drink the tea – then make your way towards the Forest of Nott.
Congrats on your move! I’ve always been tempted by cucumber sandwiches but I never felt bothered enough to make em. If I had a butler to slice my cucumbers into paper thin slices though…
We all need a butler for things like making cucumber sandwiches and to say “yesssss” in that weird voice.
